Traditional tutoring services often fail to meet the learning needs of special students as they typically employ the same materials and strategies used in the classroom, only in a one-to-one setting. By contrast, BCTS uses the proven principles of applied behavior analysis which involves breaking skills down into manageable teaching units, matching the language of instruction to the child's language comprehension skills, and employing high levels of individually determined reinforcement, employing teaching materials developed for the individual child that match his/her auditory and visual processing strengths and needs.
The WRAT-4™ (Wide Range Achievement Test) and Curriculum Based Assessments (CBAs) are used to determine the child's strengths and needs in the areas of mathematics and literacy. The WRAT-4™ provides parents with an understanding of where their child's academic abilities are in relation to their typically developing peers while the CBAs identify specific skill deficits that require remediation. The assessment report will outline the child's strengths and needs in each subject area and is provided to the family to share with the child's school such that an appropriate curriculum can be developed for the child. Specific teaching strategies are also offered such that appropriate accommodations and modifications can be included in the child's Individual Education Plan. Parents using BCTS's assessment services are not obligated to use our tutoring services. The assessment alone may meet some families' need to help the school develop a meaningful curriculum and implement strategies to help the child reach his/her fullest academic potential.
